Identity Theft in Florida

Identity theft tax refund fraud indictments were issued October 10th by the US Attorney's office in Miami, Florida. The identity theft rate in Florida is the highest in the nation according to the FTC.  One indictment involved insiders who worked for health care providers, and allegedly stole information from patient files, and sold it to other defendants who allegedly filed fraudulent income tax returns using the stolen Social Security Numbers.

There is not a lot a taxpayer can do to combat this type of identity theft fraud. Needless to say, it is prudent to keep shields up with your personal information, especially your SSN. When getting rid of mail and other documents containing personal information, be sure to properly shred it. Also, your computer and smart phone should be secured by up-to-date security software.

Here is a link to an article from the AICPA's Journal of Accountancy discussing this. http://www.journalofaccountancy.com/News/20126635.htm
